Colin McCourt and South of England Under 15 and 17s

*22/6/09 National & International success - Although we may not see too much of him in Bournemouth these days, it is clear Colin McCourt is still training hard and winning races. Colin competed, along with the likes of Steph Twell and Emma Pallant, at the St Mary's University College Relays at Twickenham on June 4th, and won the 800m in a time of 1:48.13. A photograph of Colin winning this race appears in Athletics Weekly, June 11 issue, on page 23.

More about Colin McCourt - he represented GB & NI today in the European Championships in Leiria, Portugal, which was broadcast live on BBC. He ran in the 800m and came fourth in 1:48.41 (winning time 1:47.76). Before the race the BBC were predicting he would come ninth, with 4 points - in the event his fourth place earned the team 9 points (GB finished up 4th overall, with 301 points, behind France (303) and in front of Poland (289)). In interview following the race Colin said he could have won, and was disappointed at not doing so, having "lost momentum in the third 200".

South of England Championships U15/U17
BOURNEMOUTH AC – Field Events- Medal Hunt

BAC athletes achieved great success at the recent under 15 and under 17 South of
England Athletics Championships held at the Julie Rose Stadium, Ashford, Kent on
Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th May 2009. The field medal haul included 2 gold, 1 silver
and 1 bronze.

Natalie Whisken achieved a very creditable 3rd place in the u15 javelin with a throw of
33.57m. This was Natalie’s first experience of this championship and her coach Tim
Watton was very pleased with the result. Next year should see Natalie throwing hard for
that gold spot.

Moving up an age group, Phoebe Dowson in the u17 discus started her competition with
two no throws, one of which threatened the officials 20 metres away from the discus
sector. That put immense pressure on her third throw and last chance to qualify for the
final 3 throws, with only the top 8 qualifying out of the 14 starters. Phoebe registered a
nervous 3rd throw of just under 30m to take her through in 7th place. Phoebe then pulled
out a good throw of 35.98m to move from 7th place to 2nd place and despite a
disappointing series, Phoebe finally walked away with a very creditable silver medal.
In the U17 boys hammer Andrew Elkins still training at BAC, hauled out a fine throw of
61.83 metres, just below his season’s best to take gold.

James Lelliot in the U17M long jump dominated proceedings from start to finish. He
was first away and with his opening jump of 6.74m which was better than any other of
the following competitors’ efforts. James went on to jump 6.89m and 6.90m in the 4th
and 5th rounds respectively. Despite valiant efforts from James, he and his coach Brian
Camp were a little disappointed that he did not threaten his PB of 7.13m, however the
conditions were a little benign and support from spectators somewhat weak. James also
competed in the U17 javelin, which was a first class competition at the end of the first
day. Unfortunately, very few spectators saw a fascinating competition with four lads
throwing over the English Schools Standard of 52m. James threw six personal bests
(new best of 52.82m) and came a very creditable 4th behind three of the best young
javelin throwers in the UK.

At the Wessex Young Athletes League fixture at Bournemouth on 26 April 2009, Georgina Hurd comfortably won the Long Jump and 100m events of her age group. Georgina's achievement was acknowledged by an 'Athlete of the Match' award - which was finally presented to her on the coach on the way to the next WYAL fixture at Oxford on 7 June! This award is granted in recognition of outstanding performances to up to four athletes competing at a WYAL meeting. Georgina's success was followed at Oxford on 7 June by Nicholas Hunt, who was nominated 'Athlete of the Match' for several convincing wins, including a Grade 1 Discus throw of 38.65m. The results of both these meetings can be found on the Track & Field page of the Bournemouth Athletic Club website
