Southern Men's Team Win Division One *2/8/08 Champions - BAC's Senior Men's Track & Field team have been crowned Division One Champions just twelve months after promotion from Division Two. The promotion match to claim a place in the National League is on Saturday September 13th at Abingdon. Clear your diaries! The Southern Championship underlines Bournemouth Athletic Club as the top Track & Field team in the region and it is believed to be the first time the club has won the prestigious accolade. A resounding win in the final league match of the season at Kings Park left the yellows with twenty-nine out of thirty match points. That's five wins from six matches and a second place at Swindon behind Exeter. Nearest rivals Yeovil were level on points going into the final set of matches, but top of the league on total points scored. The Somerset club also had a home fixture, but also came unstuck against in form Exeter leaving Bournemouth clear at the top. The team has flourished over many outstanding individual performances this season, but one can't look much further than the opening fixture for a title winning team performance. It was at Woking. Against Yeovil. Level on points throughout the afternoon, Bournemouth were half a point behind going into the final event; the 4x400m relay. The race could not have been tighter, the final leg could not have been more exciting, Bournemouth prevailed. By a whisker. A fraction of a second. The team only joked how important that could be at the time. On September 13th every point has to be fought for with such vigour. The dedication shown by athletes this season has to be applauded, but on an entirely personal note, the thanks should extend to those beyond the track. Firstly to Team Manager Gail Chappell and all the officials who have turned out for the team. And secondly to a remorseful young man whose naivety has prevented him competing this year. Rob McTaggart has been to all bar one fixture supporting the team and if Bournemouth Athletic Club can continue providing a positive outlet for young people then we'll always be successful whatever the outcome on the track (and field). |
