BOURNEMOUTH AC ROAD AND DISTANCE RUNNING INFORMATION Here is a a report from the 2008 club presentation evening. Click here to go back to our main index page.
Prize Winner Biographies SENIOR MEN: Steven Way: Steven Way (5000m winner) came from nowhere to become one of the Club’s highest performing distance runners in 2008, as well as being top British male in November’s New York Marathon. Head hunted after beating all bar one of the squad in April’s Rotary Quarter Marathon, Steve also holds the Club’s fastest 10k road time of the year and was the top performer at the Southern and National six-stage road relays. Steve says of his new found love of running, “I remember when the most exciting thing I did on a weekend was get a high score on my Xbox! Steve has also been a valuable member of the recently promoted Men’s team, and we look forward to seeing him in action on the track again next season. Ian White: Another of our top road runners, Ian, dubbed ‘White Lightening’ or ‘The Great White’ for his deceptively fast finishing, took the 10,000m trophy thanks to a race executed to perfection with immaculate pace judgement and a merciless sprint finish. At the age of 38, Ian has set personal bests in all distances from 5,000m to marathon this year and aims to secure a podium finish tomorrow in the Dorset road running championships. Best of luck! Greg Smith: The 400m Hurdles Trophy is awarded to Greg Smith, for his time of 58.0s, at the Dorset County Championships, which earned him 2nd place. He also set a best of 16.3s in the Sprint Hurdles at the Southern Men’s match at Battersea. Richard Reeks: Richard is here to collect his usual armful of trophies – the 110mH, High Jump, Long Jump and Pole Vault. Richard moved away from the area to train in London with the National Multi-events coach, which must have been one of the best decisions he has made, as he is 7th in the National Decathlon Rankings. His season began back in January at the Indoor Combined Events Championships, followed by a decathlon in April. He competed in both Southern Men’s matches in May, followed by the England Senior Combined Events Championships where he was placed 4th with a score of 6954 points. International duty followed, with a European Cup decathlon in Jyvaskyla, Finland, where he set a PV pb of 4.30m, and topped 7000 points. Unfortunately Richard was laid up with a succession of injuries throughout the summer, and we can only imagine what he was like at that time. Richard is also awarded the Best Performance Trophy for his contribution to the BAL Qualifier Match in September. Although still struggling with plantar fasciitis, patella tendonitis and a groin problem he declared himself fit to do PV and HJ at the Qualifier, knowing how important promotion was to the team. Once there he asked to do Sprint Hurdles ‘as you only have to run a few steps between each hurdle!’ Any one of those injuries would have ruled other athletes out, but Richard’s points that day made a huge contribution to the team getting to Div. 3 rather than Div. 4. Thank you from a very grateful team manager, we all wish you the best of luck for the future Richard, and hope to see you on our screens in 2012! Andy Turner: Andy is being presented with the Shot Putt Trophy – he has a best performance this year of 14.10m, combined with 41.85m in Discus and 41.46m in Hammer. Andy started his season early, at the Welsh Senior Indoor Championships, securing third place with 13.67m. The following month it was the British Masters Indoor Championships, where he claimed gold in discus and silver in Shot. At the County Championships he recorded his best of 14.10m, and performed consistently in both the Southern Men’s and British League. In June he took part in a Vets International – GB v France v Belgium, again performing close to his best in both Shot and Discus. Andy picked up Silver in Discus at the British Masters in Birmingham, and rounded off his season with the Men’s team at the BAL Qualifier at Abingdon. Dan Brunsden: Dan is awarded the Javelin and Discus trophies, having recorded wins in both events at the Dorset County Champs, along with a third gold in Hammer. His best performances of 54.01m for Javelin, 42.83m in Discus, 13.94m for Shot and 45.05m for Hammer, ensured good results in all the throws for the Men’s team, despite the fact that Dan was carrying an injury for most of the season. He was placed in the top 3 for all four throws at the South West Inter-Counties, and competed for the South West at Beveren, Belgium. He was bitterly disappointed to miss the BAL Qualifier having had surgery a few days before, but I am sure he and Andy will continue to challenge each other next season in the British League. Matt Frampton: Matt is the winner of the Hammer Trophy, having thrown a best of 56.35m. He began his season in February at the Bournemouth Hammer Circle Competition with a throw of 52.93, and set new pbs in virtually every match he took part in after that. He recorded his best of the season at the Qualifier, where he started the ball rolling with a win in the Hammer, which settled the team’s early nerves, and set the pace for the match. Matt threw over 60 metres in 2002, and it is good to see his performances heading in that direction again. Maris Kuklis: The Endeavour Award is presented to Maris Kuklis. Maris has been a vital member of the Men’s team this year, and it was hard to know where to start looking for his stats on the internet. He is actually 66th in the National Decathlon rankings! He is a dream for a team manager as he is so versatile, and has covered many events, including Pole Vault, this year due to absences and injuries. His main events are 110mH (17.19s), 400mH (58.2s), and High Jump where he consistently jumps close to his pb of 1.82m, recorded at the South West Inter-Counties. He completed the decathlon at the BAC Multi-event day, so could well find himself just as busy next year! UNDER 20 MEN: Matt Sloane: Is awarded the High Jump and NJAL Top Points Trophies. Matt is well known for his high jumping ability, with a best this year of 2.00m, which places him in the top 20 nationally, but has proved himself to be something of a multi-eventer this year. At the County Championships he won gold’s in High Jump and Triple Jump, silver in Long Jump and bronze in Javelin. This form continued throughout the Junior League season, where Matt did the maximum five events in all four matches, and regularly scored over fifty points a match. He gained a top eight place in the Junior League Grand Prix, but was unable to compete due to injury. Matt will be a valuable member of the Men’s team next year Declan Foley: Declan won the Junior Men’s Javelin title at the Dorset County Championships at the start of the season and followed this with another gold medal at Dorset Schools where he threw his pb of 55.61m. Following another good performance at SW Schools, Declan threw 51.92m at the English Schools Championships in Gateshead. Declan also competed for the Club in the National Junior League, and represented Dorset at the South West Inter-Counties. Declan is also a promising rugby player. UNDER 17 MEN: Alex Hurll: Alex collects the 100m trophy for U17 Men. He is one of our newer members, who only joined halfway through the season, but was still able to compete in several of the leagues, recording performances of 12.3s for the 100m, 26.0s for 200m and also did the 400m at the Dennett Trophy meeting. He is a dedicated trainer and will continue to improve next season if he keeps it up. Well done Alex! Conor Mugan: Conor takes the 800m Trophy in this age group for a pb of 1:59.9s, which he recorded at one of the Senior Men’s matches. He also clocked times of 54.3s in the 400m and ran 4:18.4s in the 1500m at the County Championships. He has competed this year in the Wessex League, Young Athletes and Junior League’s as well as the Men’s Div 1 and BMC races. He moves up to U20s next season, so we wish him all the best for 2009. Andrew Elkins: Andrew opened his season in February, when he threw 55.72m with a 5kg hammer. He has hardly stopped since, competing in Open competitions and league matches all over the country. He won the Dorset County Championships, as well as Dorset Schools. He was also one of the youngest athletes selected to train with the Gold National Squad. Andrew was second at English Schools with 57.95m. He again won silver at the AAAs, with a throw of 60.77m, and was placed third at the UK School Games at Bath. Not content with this however, he finished his season on 63.08m, which smashed the previous Club Record, leaving him second in the National rankings, and he will still be competing in this age group next season. Andrew also collects the Shot Putt trophy with a pb of 12.25m at the County Championships, the Discus trophy (39.63m), and Javelin ( 44.95m). It will not surprise you to find out that he also wins the Club trophy for most NYAL points scored by an U17M. Good luck for next year Andrew, we hope it will be as successful as this one! UNDER 15 BOYS: Fergus O’Reilly: What a year this young man has had! He is awarded the trophies for 400m, 800m, 1500m and 3000m, as well as Cross Country. Fergus won gold at the Counties in both 800m and 1500m, as well as silver for 400m. He followed this with another first place in the 1500m at Dorset Schools, and a second place at SW Schools. Fergus was selected for English Schools, where he competed on the Friday morning, and was lining up at Kings Park on Sunday to run in the Wessex League! Another first place in the 1500m at the South West Inter Counties followed, and he concluded his track season with a massive pb of 4:14.74s in the AAAs Under 15 Championships, improving his times by more than 20 seconds over the season. Not one to sit back and take it easy, Fergus also won the U15 Boys Hampshire League Cross Country title. What a fantastic list of achievements, and all thoroughly deserved, as Fergus is as dedicated in training as he is in competitions. We wish you continued success in the future and will do all we can to support you. Joe Ring: Joe is one of our multi-talented athletes, dividing his time between rugby and athletics. He is collecting the 80m Hurdles trophy which he won for a time of 13.2s at the Dorset County Championships, and also takes home the Long Jump trophy for a pb of 5.44m the same weekend. Joe also recorded a time of 12.6s in the 100m, and a High Jump pb of 1.55m. As well as competing for the Club, he also represented Dorset at the South West Inter-Counties. Well done Joe, keep it up! Alex Cox: Alex began his season by winning the Under 15 Indoor High Jump Championships in February with 1.87m – not a bad start to the year! Needless to say, he won the Dorset County Championships, as well as Dorset and Southwest Schools. You won’t have seen Alex jumping much in training this year though, as he has been carrying a long term knee injury. This did not stop him travelling up to Gateshead for the English Schools Championships, where he again won gold for the second year running, with a pb of 1.93m. All those who were there will remember being on the edge of their seats, and cheering a brilliant performance. He followed that with 1.85m at the AAAs. Alex also wins the Javelin trophy with a best performance of 50.78m. He has also recorded 40.20m with a discus, and 12.46 in the Shot Putt. Further proof of his outstanding ability is that he shares the trophy for U15B NYAL Top point scorer with Gary Jones. We all hope your injury problems clear up soon Alex, and we are looking forward to seeing you competing for both the Junior League and Senior team in the British League as soon as you are fit. Gary Jones: Gary is another athlete who scores consistently well for the Club. He started his season in February with a performance of 38.05m in the Hammer. By the time he won the Hampshire County Championships a few months later, his pb had risen to 46.29m. He took bronze at the U15 Championships at Ashford, followed by the Hampshire Schools title, and was placed 9th at English Schools in July. He then improved his best to 49.62m, taking second place at the U15/U20 Inter-Counties, followed by 49.83m the week after, which puts him at 12th place in the National rankings for Hammer. He is awarded the U15B Discus and Shot trophies for throws of 40.26m, and 13.29m respectively. Gary also shares the NYAL top point scorer trophy with Alex. Gary regularly travels down from his home in Andover to train at Kings Park, and he has certainly reaped the rewards for all his hard work – well done Gary. Jordan Knox: Jordan is another of our talented youngsters. He has had a few problems with injuries this year, but this has not stopped him from competing regularly for the Club throughout the season. He has competed in a variety of events, such as 100m, 200m, 400m, 80mH, Long Jump and Hammer. He is a great asset for a team manager, as he is always willing to go the extra mile for the team. His main event is Long Jump, with a pb of 5.11m, but he is also a competent thrower, and a keen track athlete. He is awarded the Endeavour Trophy, not just for his achievements in competition, but also in recognition of his dedication to training and his positive attitude. UNDER 13 BOYS: Nicholas Hunt: Where do I start? Nicholas has competed in 14 different events this season, including every field event, so he is well on his way to a double decathlon! He broke three Club Records, for Discus (36.55m), Hammer (37.77m) and the Throws Pentathlon (1913 points). At the Exeter Combined Events in September he scored an impressive 2175 points. As well as picking up the trophies for Discus and Hammer, he also collects trophies for 200m (26.14s), 75mH (12.18s), High Jump (1.65m), Long Jump (5.46m) and Shot Putt (12.04m), It will be no surprise that Nicholas will also receive the trophy for top point scorer for the NYAL in this age group. Nick moves up to the Under 15 age group next year, which will give him the opportunity to break a few more Club Records! Declan Toth: Another very talented athlete, Declan has proved once again that he is extremely versatile. He has recorded 26.4s for the 200m, 5:06.6 for the 1500m, and 4.83m for the Long Jump. He is awarded trophies for 100m, with a pb of 12.8s at Dorset Schools, and also for the 800m, when he took gold at the County Championships in a time of 2:21.9s. He is also awarded the Consistency trophy in recognition of his efforts this season, as well as the Cross Country trophy. Declan also represented Dorset at the South West Inter-County match at Exeter. Well done Declan – keep it up! Daniel Cox: Unfortunately for us, Dan is also a very committed footballer, so divides his time between his football matches and tournaments, and athletics. Despite the fact that he has little time to train, Dan tops the BAC Javelin stats with 30.70m. He also achieved 24.50m in Discus and 8.28m in Shot. I’m sure we will see more of Dan in all the throws next year, and we can be sure he will give 100%. Shaun Prentice: In his first full season with the Club, Shaun is presented with the 1500m trophy with a time of 5:10.0s. He was also runner up to Declan in the Club stats for the 800m with 2:36.7. Shaun seems to thrive on the competition on the track and I’m sure he will do well next season, and in the future if he continues his hard work in training. Brendan Kirkton: Brendan is one of those athletes for whom the word ‘loyalty’ was invented. He hardly ever misses a match, and is one of the most dedicated athletes in training. Primarily a middle distance runner, Brendan has a pb of 5:12.3s for the 1500m, and 2:35.0 for the 800m, which he achieved while representing Dorset at the South West Inter-Counties. He has also volunteered to fill spaces in the sprints and relays regularly, in an effort to score extra points for the team. You may not be aware that Brendan also has a promising future as a race-walker, having completed the 3000m walk in 21:27.8. Brendan is awarded the Endeavour Trophy along with our appreciation for all his efforts this year. SENIOR WOMEN: The Senior Women’s team finished the season in second place in Division II West. This was despite the fact that there are very few Senior women, but the younger athletes were very keen to fill the slots. By finishing second, the team gained promotion to Division 1 for 2009. Thanks go to Wynne and Julie for their efforts as Team Managers, and we wish them luck for next season. Anya Kay: Anya is awarded the High Jump Trophy for her performances in the Southern Women’s matches. She has a best of 1.60m this year and competed at this level consistently throughout the season. She won silver at the County Championships and went one better at Dorset Schools. She also picked up a bronze at SW Schools. She is a talented multi-eventer, and is a great asset to any team – well done Anya! Amy Spencer: Amy wins the trophy for Top Points scored in the Southern Women’s league, despite the fact that she is an U17! She competed in four matches, and although we know Amy for her hurdling and sprinting abilities, she proved her versatility and willingness to compete for the team by doing Shot and Hammer at the last match! Amy has a lot of potential on the track and we wish her the best of luck in the future. UNDER 20 WOMEN: Hayley Wright: Hayley wins the Ralph Trophy for the top National Junior League point scorer. Hayley has performed consistently throughout the year, starting her season in February at the England Under 20 Championships in Birmingham where she recorded 10.98m in the Triple Jump. She took top spot in the Hampshire County Championships, and then switched her allegiance to Dorset Schools, where she gained her Long Jump pb of 5.06m. Following this, Hayley made her Dorset debut at English Schools where she finished in 8th place with 11.04m, having always represented Hampshire in previous years. She competed in all the Junior League matches this year, and once again scored highly in LJ, TJ and HJ, narrowly missing out on a top 8 placing in the Junior League Grand Prix Final. Hayley has her last year as an Under 20 next year, and I am sure she will still be up there competing with the best. Jemma Tewksbury: Jemma is awarded the U20W Outstanding Throws Trophy in recognition for her 11th place in the Javelin rankings this year. She won gold medals for Javelin at both the County Championships and Dorset Schools. She was placed 5th at the U20 Championships in Bedford, and 4th at the English Schools Championships. Jemma did four Southern Women’s matches, recording her personal best of 42.74 at the Abingdon match. She also won gold at the South West Inter-Counties to finish off a very successful year in style. Unfortunately Jemma can’t be with us tonight, but her coach, John Hawthorne has kindly come along to collect the trophy on her behalf. Anya Kay: Anya is awarded the Ken Walton trophy for Outstanding Track for her 100mH, so it is fitting that she should collect her award from Sian. Anya has competed consistently this year in both the Junior League and Southern Women’s teams, and recorded her best of 15.6s when she finished 2nd at Dorset Schools, and then went one better to win South West Schools in 15.7s. Keep up the hard work Anya! Rose O’Reilly: The Best Supporting Under 20 athlete goes to Rose O’Reilly this year. Rose has also supported both the Women’s and Junior League teams, and recorded performances this year of 24.67m in discus and 31.66m in Javelin. She is also a very competent Shot Putter and Hammer Thrower. She is another good all-round athlete, playing both hockey and rounders to a high level, which obviously explains why she is such a good team player. She also represented Dorset at the South West Inter-Counties. UNDER 17 WOMEN: Grace Keeping: Grace is awarded the trophies for 100m, 300m and 400m. As well as keeping up with her studies for her GCSEs, Grace supported all of the leagues again this season, often competing on both Saturdays and Sundays. She set a pb of 13.05s in the 100m at the South of England Inter-Counties, competing as an Under 20, and recorded another of 43.0s in the 300m at the South West Inter-Counties, proving that she is happy to compete with the best. As well as finding the time to train regularly and compete at this level, Grace has become a qualified sprints coach, and has given up a great deal of her time to coach regularly for the Club. Thank you so much for all you have done for us this year, and we wish you continued success as an Under 20 next season. Abby Sandford: Abby’s 2008 season started during the winter, with a Gold medal at the National Indoor Sportshall final. Being a talented multi-eventer, she took first place at the County Championships in Shot, with a 9.11m putt, and was placed second in the Long Jump with 5.03m. Abby also performed well in the High Jump and Javelin this year, but unfortunately has been affected by a persistent back problem, preventing her from continuing with her long jump for much of the season. However she is awarded the trophy for Shot, being a clear winner with a pb of 9.47m. Hopefully over the winter she will return to full fitness, as we want to see her competing in the Under 20 age group next year. Lisa Hicks: Lisa is presented with the U17W Triple Jump Trophy, in a season that has been hampered by injuries. Although not able to compete for much of the year, Lisa has worked hard on her general fitness and is now training again. She has also spent a considerable amount of time helping the youngsters on a Wednesday evening, and has become a competent and very popular coach. Let’s hope her injuries are behind her and she can look forward to building on her success next year. Charlotte Sykes: Charlotte wins the Hammer Trophy with a personal best of 36.09m which places her 31st in the National Rankings. She competed 16 times this year, and threw her pb at the last competition! She won the County Championships, followed by second places at both Dorset Schools and South West Schools. She threw 35.61m at English Schools to make the final, and also represented Dorset at the South West Inter-Counties. Amy Spencer: Amy Spencer is awarded the Endeavour Trophy for the Under 17 Women’s age group. She competed in the SW, Junior League, Young Athletes and Wessex Leagues this season, and recorded pbs of 13.3s in the 100m, 12.5s in the 80mH, 49.4s in the 300mH, 7.99m in the Shot and 17.67m in Hammer. Amy is an excellent team player and her enthusiasm is there for all to see (and hear!) Well done again, Amy! UNDER 15 GIRLS: This has been a very pleasing age-group this year, with strong competition in some events. Recognition of this fact can be seen in the current Athletics Weekly, which lists five of our U15 Girls in top positions in the national rankings, in both track and field events. What better inspiration could we have for the younger athletes just starting out? Tori Coltart: Tori is another talented multi-eventer who has had a very busy year. In January she took top honours in Long Jump at the Southern Indoor U15 Championships with a best of 5.01m. At the Dorset County Championships, she placed second in 100m, Javelin, Shot and Long Jump. Not content with this however, she increased the pressure, which soon paid off as she won the County Schools with a 5.05m Long Jump. Tori competed at the English Schools Championships this year for the first time, in a very strong Long Jump field, and was also selected for the Junior Girls 4x100m Relay. She has supported all of the leagues this year, and as she moves up to Under 17 next year, will, I’m sure, become a valuable member of the Junior League squad. Tori trains at Kings Park and at Weymouth, and also finds time to be a Sports Ambassador for her school. She wins the trophies for 100m, Javelin and top U15G point scorer for the NYAL Jo Legg: Jo is another of our top sprinters and Long Jumpers in this age group, and receives the trophies for 200m, 300m and Long Jump. Her best performances this year were 27.28s in the 200m, 5.12m in Long Jump, and a time of 42.9s, which broke the previous Club record and places her 20th in the National Rankings, which is an excellent achievement. Throughout the season she reduced her 300m time by over two and a half seconds, so you can see the effort and dedication she has put in over the summer. She has also competed in the 100m and High Jump, and has recorded performed to a high standard all year. She also went to English Schools for Long Jump and joined Tori in the 4x100mR. Well done Jo, and I am sure next year will be just as good, if not better. Daisy Harper-Brown: Daisy collects the 800m, 1500m and Cross Country trophies, and is another of our U15G rising stars. She was awarded medals in both distances at the Counties, but then focused on the 1500m for most of the summer, reducing her time for this distance by over 20 seconds over the course of the season. She finished second at Dorset Schools, and also competed at the South of England Championships. She pestered all year to do a 3000m, and finally got her chance at the Dennett Trophy match, where she was allowed to compete against the U17s. It was no surprise when she finished first in a time of 10:51.5s, which puts her in 19th place in the National Rankings for this distance. Daisy is another of our athletes who trains hard and regularly supports the Club, and we wish her continued success for the future. Katrina White: Katrina wins the trophy for 75mH in her first full year of competition. However, she is also a very talented triple jumper, having placed second at the Dorset County Championships with 9.24m. She increased her pb with a jump of 9.91m, recorded when competing as an U17W, which places her at 15th in the National Rankings. Katrina has also represented the Club in Long Jump and High Jump, and has proved herself to be an accomplished athlete with a very bright future. Congratulations Katrina for all your hard work and achievements this year. Phoebe Dowson: Phoebe collects the Shot and Discus trophies again this year. During the season Phoebe became Hampshire County, Hampshire Schools and South of England Champion for U15G Discus and followed that with two bronze medals at the English Schools Championships in Gateshead and the AAAs in Birmingham. Phoebe competed for BAC in the Southern Women’s and Young Athletes Leagues, retaining an unbeaten discus record and adding valuable points in both Shot and Javelin. Phoebe ended the season with a personal best discus throw of 35.66m, which broke the BAC U15G record of 33.92m, previously held for 29 years, since 1979. This throw also consolidated Phoebe’s 2nd place in the UK rankings for 2008. Almaz Gaere: Almaz is presented with the trophies for High Jump and Triple Jump. She is a very talented jumper, recording pbs of 4.47m in Long Jump, 1.55m in High Jump and 10.21m in Triple Jump, which sets a new Club record and places her at 6th in the National Rankings. She has competed for the Club in Wessex, Young Athlete and Senior Women’s matches, as well as winning the title of County High Jump Champion. She is another young athlete with a very promising future. Shona Williams: Shona is awarded the Endeavour Trophy, having competed in the 100m, 200m, 75mH, Discus, Shot, Javelin, Long Jump, Triple Jump and Pole Vault! Shona is a very popular team member, and is always happy to support all of the teams. With a list of events like this to her credit, she could have a promising future as a multi-eventer! Thanks for all your efforts this year Shona, we really do appreciate it! UNDER 13 GIRLS: Laura Hutton: This is Laura’s first full season with the Club, and she has proved her versatility by winning the 100m, 200m, 800m and 1500m trophies. She is another athlete who has competed to a high standard throughout the season, and has tried a variety of different events to see which ones suit her best. She won gold at both the Counties and Dorset Schools in the 800m, and picked up silver medals at the Counties for 200m and 1500m. She has also supported the Wessex, Young Athletes and the Southern Women’s leagues and has proved to be a valuable asset in all three teams. Catherine Teenan: Catherine has only been a member of the Club for a very short time, but has made quite an impression, and wins the Trophy for 70m Hurdles. She has represented BAC in both the Wessex and Young Athletes leagues, and has a best time of 12.9s in the hurdles and 23.1s in the 150m. She is a very dedicated and determined trainer and I am sure she will have a bright future at the Club. Georgia Hurd: Georgia collects the U13G Long Jump trophy with a personal best of 4.27m which she recorded at the Spring Open. She is also a very talented sprinter, with pbs of 11.4s for 75m, 14.0s for the 100m and 31.0s for the 200m. Georgia has competed throughout the year in the Wessex and young Athletes leagues, and has also represented Dorset at the south West Inter-Counties in Long Jump. Well done Georgia! Natalie Whisken: Natalie has dominated the U13G throws again this year, and is awarded the trophies for Shot, Discus and Javelin. She set a pb of 25.40m in discus, but her performances of 10.08m in Shot and 37.02m in Javelin set new Club records. She has also competed in the 70mH and Long Jump to gain extra points for the team. She is a very dedicated trainer and is another athlete who thoroughly deserves the successes she has achieved this year. Emma Horn: Emma is awarded the Endeavour Trophy, as well as the Trophy for Best 1st Year Cross Country. She is a joy to have in a team as she is happy to have a go at most events, and has taken part in the 800m, Long Jump, Shot and Javelin this season. The best thing about Emma is that she does all of this with a huge smile on her face, and genuinely seems to enjoy her competitions. Emma Butterworth: This is Emma’s first year with the Club, and she is awarded the Cross Country Trophy. She won the Year 6 Bournemouth Schools Cross Country as well as the Bournemouth Town Sports 600m, breaking the record by five seconds. She also bagged the County 600m title. She won her first 800m in the Wessex League, and has also represented the Club in the Hampshire League Cross Country, finishing 13th in the Under 13s, despite still being just 11 years old. She shows a lot of commitment in training and a lot of promise for the future. SPECIAL/OUTSTANDING AWARDS: The Squire Trophy for Outstanding U17 Field Athlete, and the Cooper Dene Trophy for Outstanding Junior Athlete are awarded to Andrew Elkins. Andrew won his first International vest following his success at English Schools, and threw 58.46m in Croatia. Not content with this, Andrew finished the season with a pb of 63.08m which smashed the Club Record and confirmed his second place in the UK rankings. Andrew will be competing in this age group again next year, so I’m sure this talented athlete will climb even higher in the all-time lists. The George Eastman Trophy for the Young Club Athlete of the Year – Nicholas Hunt. Nick tops the National rankings for Discus, he is second in the Long Jump and 75mH rankings, and third for both High Jump and Shot Putt. He is also top of the National Pentathlon rankings by almost 400 points! This is a phenomenal achievement by a very talented young athlete, and we should do all we can to support Nick and his family to ensure he continues to achieve his very considerable potential. Well done Nick. Portman Trophy for Outstanding Athlete of the Year – Richard Reeks. Do you remember that decathlon I mentioned in April – the Somerset County Combined Events? Richard recorded the following performances: Shot 12.33m pb LJ 7.17m pb HJ 2.08m pb 400m 50.38s 100m 11.06s pb JT 48.47m pb DT 38.12m pb PV 3.90m 110mH 14.56s pb 1500m 4:50.32s pb These performances gave a total of eight pbs from the ten events, and 7304 points which was a fantastic achievement. The best way to sum Richard up is with the saying: ‘Perfection is the goal, Greatness will be tolerated.’ Mike Stokes Trophy for Outstanding Throws (U20M) – Steve Brunsden What can we say about Steve that hasn’t been said before? Steve has recorded pbs in all four throws this year – 56.24m in Hammer, 45.52m in Javelin, 36.84m in Discus and 10.94m in Shot. He also has a best of 47.42m with the Senior 7.26kg Hammer. He took first place in U20 Hammer at the Counties, and the following weekend set his pb with the 7.26kg hammer while competing for the Men’s Team at Mile End. He has competed regularly for both the Junior League and Senior teams this season. Steve also competed at the Southern U20 Championships at Crystal Palace, where he finished in third place. His final competition this year was the BAL Qualifier, where he notched up a B string win in Hammer. Steve has one more year as an Under 20 so should be able to improve still further on his 12th place in the National Hammer Rankings.
