Youngsters shine in the presence of greatness -
Simon Munro’s form took another huge jump at Basingstoke just when the team required it in the latest round of Hampshire League cross country action. With top scorer Ryan Saunders missing, matching early season scores would be tough, but Simon’s fine run, knocking 30 places from his previous outings, ensured BAC narrowly held on to second place in Division One. Inspired by the presence of 2:13 marathon man John Boyes and two time London Marathon vet winner Mark Hargreaves, Jon Sharkey led the team home in eighth position; the club’s highest in a Hampshire League race for over five years. Ian Habgood’s eighth consecutive Hampshire League outing earned him 21st place while Rob McTaggart was lucky to be third scorer with Simon Munro bearing down on him. Hargreaves, out of action for the last five months, showed his commitment to the team by turning out far from fully fit and making his way steadily through the field to finish as fifth scorer. Don Pavey, making his debut for the club, finished with Robin Copestick while Under 20 800m runner Conor Mugan also turned out for the first time on the country. Simon Hunt was 154th and fellow M50 John Boyes had to withdraw midway through with a hamstring problem while placed between Simon and Conor. Hampshire League Popham Airfield, BAC Senior Men results: 8 Jon Sharkey 24:57, 21 Ian Habgood 25:43, 45 Rob McTaggart 26:55, 47 Simon Munro 26:56, 51 Mark Hargreaves 27:10, 66 Robin Copestick 27:30, 67 Don Pavey 27:30, 119 Conor Mugan 29:42, 154 Simon Hunt 30:57. |
