James Lelliott becomes Under 17 National Champion

*8/3/09James Lelliott wins long jump title in Birmingham - James Lelliott (BAC and Millfield School), coached by Brian Camp (BAC), competed in the Aviva England Athletics under 20/17/15 Championships at Birmingham NIA on 15 February 2009.

In an exciting U17 Long Jump event, James was competing against most of the top young jumpers of this and last year. In a large field of 18 young hopefuls the lead was taken by David Harvey (Windsor Slough & Eaton) with 6.60m. James responded in the second round with 6.62 (pb) and held that narrow lead till the 4th round when Ronnie Walcott (Enfield & Haringey) came through with a leap of 6.63m. (Ronnie was one of the top jumpers last year with an outdoor pb of 6.90 - note: very few athletes have a better indoor pb than outdoor).

In the 5th round James pulled out a great leap of 6.72m, which would have been even further if he had hit the take-off board. Despite gallant efforts, none of the other competitors could respond, and James is the England Athletics Indoor Champion for 2009!
