New season kicks off at Farley Mount

*15/10/09 Ryan leads the way in team success - Bournemouth AC made a successful return to Division One in the first fixture of the 2009/2010 Hampshire cross country league at Farley Mount.

Quality within the squad not only to avoid relegation, but compete in the division is not in doubt; a third place finish behind nationally strong clubs Aldershot and Winchester clearly demonstrates that.

However with just six athletes out in force on the day, consistently finding that quality in a league where all races count may prove difficult. That was the main reason for relegation two seasons ago and emphasises the important each runner makes in the club’s cross country success.

With the club’s available veterans taking on the British Masters 10 mile championships on the same weekend, a squad made up entirely of senior men packed four runners into the top 21. St. Mary’s student and Under 20 runner Ryan Saunders headed the more experienced Ian Habgood, Jon Sharkey and Rob McTaggart although just 30 seconds split the four in a traditional display of BAC packing.

Robin Copestick showed his worth to the team for the second time in three weeks. Although a little further back in 58th, his score was vital in securing third position. Sixth scorer was BAC debutant Simon Munro. Simon competed for Portsmouth University at cross country last year and is showing signs of improvement in beating a number of runners he was trailing last time out.

Under 15 champion Fergus O'Reilly was finished sixth in his first race as an Under 17 while J Grose, D Toth, B Stone and B Kirkton gave Bournemouth a sixth place finish in the Under 15s.
