Dorset represented at South West inter-counties competition

*20/10/09 Dorset at the races in Newton Abbot - If ever there was a race where commitment deserved medals then this was it. The 2009 South West inter counties road race championships was fraught from the moment the date was announced and a rule change declaring all named runners would score for their county.

The date clashed with too many more prestigious events taking place including two national competitions, a fact made clear to the powers that be. Counties would be left relying on decent club runners who would not usually get the chance to wear a county vest. Aside from hosts Devon, only Somerset and Dorset found enough runners to have their counties represented.

For the men, George Dayantis (Christchurch Runners) and Graeme Miller (Bournemouth AC) donned county vests for the first time joining Robin Copestick (Bournemouth AC) and the automatic choice of Ian Habgood (Bournemouth AC). In Steph Slade (Egdon Heath Harriers) and Becky Griffith (Poole Runners) Dorset's women were almost at full strength although in only being granted three places rather than the usual four, a last minute illness left the women without any sort of team. Determined to field a full team, a pre-entered Dorset resident was found less than an hour before the start ensuring everyone came home with a South West of England Bronze medal.

As for the performances, Ian Habgood set a new PB in 73:06 while Robin Copestick broke the 80 minute mark running his fastest Half Marathon in more than three years. George Dayantis was less than a minute further back also setting a new best while Graeme Miller's 83 minute run gained Bournemouth AC first club team on the day.

Ian and Robin's performances have now been included into the latest BAC club championship table.

Steph Slade was seventh just five weeks after her first marathon while Becky Griffith also claimed a top ten finish. Third scorer Alanda Vere from Axe Valley was delighted with the unexpected South West honour having importantly played her part in a full team.
