Vets Take On The Seniors - And Win!

*15/12/08 Christmas 10k - Bournemouth AC took away a selection of the spoils at the hugely popular Christmas 10k and ended a successful 2008 on a high. Athletes won prizes in eight different categories while there were five personal bests to speak of from the notoriously fast course.

Poole Runner Lee Rodriguez won the race for the fourth time having claimed a hat-trick of wins representing New Forest Runners. Behind him a group of seven went through halfway in contention for second place. Poole AC’s Richard Horton made the first move and endured a tough battle with Ian White and Jon Sharkey as the others fell back.

The trio were still neck and neck with half a mile remaining as the attacks kept coming resulting in a half minute plus negative splits and new bests for second placed White and third placed Sharkey. Richard Horton claimed fourth just ahead of team mate Andy Clements.

Mark Hargreaves (7th) and John Boyes (14th) were both prominent in the age group prizes while there were personal bests from Matt Kiernan, Cherry Sheffrin and Joe Price.

In a twist to the usual team competitions, race director Chris Potter had a category for senior teams and another for veteran teams. Bournemouth AC won them both, but it was the veterans who took club bragging rights. Jon Sharkey, Andy Jennings and Robin Copestick amassed 31 points for the seniors, but were beaten by eight points by Ian White, Mark Hargreaves and John Boyes.
