Masters by name, masters by nature

*15/10/09 Medal haul for BAC - Bournemouth AC returned to a happy hunting ground of recent years and plundered no fewer than thirteen medals at the British Masters Ten Mile championships.

Contested over July’s Portland Ten course, it was a familiar route for a squad who have won the team title four years in a row. The cold October winds were a far cry from the usual July sunshine and it was a debutant to the course who led the way from start to finish. Steve Way was using the run as a warm up race for Great South and the newly qualified M35 pulled away from M55 legend Mike Hagar after four miles. His finishing time of 54.54 not only crowned Steve a national champion, but it was the fastest Portland Ten performance by a BAC athlete since Mike Grist in 2001.

Ian White has largely had a year to forget and battling back from yet another niggling injury, collected a Bronze medal in the same category. Nick Kenchington also collected individual Bronze in his category (M45), but helped the trio strike Gold in the M35 team competition in pipping Graeme Miller into the final team position.

Janie Chapman was the club’s sole woman on the day and although her asthma was hit by the cold sea breeze, battled strongly to win Gold in the W40 category.

Ian Graham (M60) and Pete Gaze (M70) missed out on national medals although both won Bronze in the South West Vets competition. The duo combined with Simon Hunt to form an M50 team with an average age of more than 60, but still managed Bronze in the team standings.
