Senior Men's Team Win British League Berth
*24/9/08
- South of England Athletics Champions Bournemouth AC will be mixing with
the UK's elite next season having won promotion to the British Athletics
League.
The Kings Park squad finished second in the BAL qualifier at Abingdon
featuring the UK’s top eight territorial league clubs. Bournemouth AC and
Cambridge Harriers tussled for victory throughout, with Cambridge eventually
prevailing in the deciding 4x400m relay. Both clubs earned a double
promotion to British League Three joining Bedford, Crawley, Derby,
Maidstone, Southend and local rivals Team Southampton.
Bournemouth dominated proceedings in the field dropping just four points
across a double Hammer win, the Shot Putt and Long Jump. A 56.35m season’s
best from Matt Frampton won the Hammer by a staggering ten meters while
South of England Under 20 Bronze medalist Steve Brunsden took the B string
victory in 43.20m.
Shot Putters Andy Turner and Simon Armstrong (A 2nd 12.98m, B 1st 12.28m)
together with Long Jumpers Jody Chappell and James Warsop (A 2nd 6.85m, B
1st 6.45m) helped distance Bournemouth from the chasing pack.
GB International decathlete Richard Reeks top scored with forty-nine points
from four events despite suffering a catalogue of injuries including plantar
fasciitis and patella tendonitis. The twenty-two year-old still managed an A
string Pole Vault win (4.20m) in addition to High Jump and High Hurdles
second places.
British University Championships medalist Sven Knipphals also came good
after an injury dogged summer. The German sustained a collapsed lung that
wrote off two months. But he surged back into action with a 10.9 seconds PB
in the 100m and 23.3 seconds in the 200m.
Nigel Hayman claimed the only track victory of the weekend. Regularly
traveling from Ipswich to represent the club, Hayman clocked 15.8 seconds in
the B string High Hurdles recording his second fastest ever time.
There were also promising performances from teenagers Richard Felton and
Conor Mugan in the middle distance events as the club looks to bolster the
squad for next season and nurture the unquestionable young talent within the
local area.
Match score: 1 Cambridge 333, 2
Bournemouth 326, 3 Yeovil 281, 4 Coventry 277, 5 Havering & Mayesbrook 275,
6 Exeter 268, 7 Tonbridge 224, 8 Glasgow 199.
