Hignett, O'Reilly, Hunt and Whisken featured in weekly sports magazine

*30/1/09 Bournemouth AC featured in Athletics weekly - Anyone reading Athletics Weekly recently will be left in no doubt that Bournemouth Athletic Club is alive and well, with prominent references to, and photographs of some of, Susie Hignett, Fergus O'Reilly, Nicholas Hunt and Natalie Whisken.

At the Cardiff Cross Challenge, on January 18, Susie and Fergus both won their respective races, namely Senior Women and Under 15 Boys. The January 1 issue of AW contains a full report of the event, and includes photographs of both our athletes, with 'Bournemouth' clearly and proudly displayed on their vests.

To quote AW concerning the Senior Women's race
'Susie Hignett took a comfortable victory in her first race in what she considered a below-par 37th position in the under-23 race at the European Cross Country Championships.
The Bournemouth AC athlete started steadily and then extended a margin of victory of 24 seconds over Stroud's Kate Goodhead.

Hignett said: "I was really pleased especially after my last race. Something went wrong. I'm not quite sure, but it just didn't happen for me at the Europeans".

The 22-year-old has been training in South Africa since and wanted to race here to test her fitness.
"I've been away for a little bit and thought I was fit so I thought I'd come here to show myself that I was capable of being a good athlete", she said.

"I had some good training out there and I managed to pull some confidence together to come back and do another race and thankfully it went well"

Hignett, whose main aim this winter is the UK Inter-Counties and World Cross Country Championship Trials in Nottingham's Wollaton Park, said: "I wanted to go out there and take it steady for the first lap and then I just pushed on the last lap, although I meant to push on a bit sooner" '.

Of the Under 15 Boys' race, AW said
'The race went to Bournemouth's Fergus O'Reilly by seven seconds.
A South West champion, he was expecting tougher competition.
"I thought because it was windy and I'm quite strong in the wind, I'd let them chase me into the wind," he said. "It's probably not my type of course because it's muddy. I'm probably better on the hills" '.

The December 11 issue of AW contains the top U13 boys' 2008 rankings, in which Nicholas Hunt features in no less than eight events, namely 200m (Declan Toth is also included in the rankings here), 75m hurdles, High Jump, Pole Vault, Long Jump, Shot, Discus and Pentathlon.

AW's headline to the rankings is "Multi-talented Hunt showing great promise" and goes on to say: "Bournemouth's Nicholas Hunt seems to appear in every event and in reality that isn't far from the truth as he is the leading performer in four and in the top three in five others. Nicholas won five Dorset county titles and three events at the South West Inter-Counties. His only loss in a full season of competition was over 100m against older athletes. Nicholas climbed to third on the all-time list for the age group in the pentathlon".

Natalie Whisken appears in the 2008 U13 girls' rankings in three events, namely Shot, Discus and Javelin (in which Natalie was top), which are reported in the 4 December issue of AW. The introduction in AW to the rankings makes specific mention of Natalie, pointing out that Natalie has "moved to third on the all-time list for under-13 javelin"

Natalie, Nicholas and Fergus all achieved new club records in 2008, and, as can be seen from the updated club records list which can be found on the Bournemouth Athletic Club website. Many congratulations to them, and to Susie, for their achievements in 2008!
